In the Song Dynasty, there were shirts without sleeves, short and small shirts lined inside, and long shirts worn outside. In the poem "Mixed Memory", Yuan Zhen, a writer of the Tang Dynasty, had a poem "Reminiscent of a double-literal shirt."

At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, people began to wear suits and wear shirts in their suits. They used them as shirts and middle ties. They were usually five buttons.
